I kind of have a good excuse for missing so many one-week theatrical releases this year, as I shot a movie in October and have been editing it. But that doesn't make it feel any better. Here's a five-best list:
- Eephus (Carson Lund)
- Peter Hujar’s Day (Ira Sachs)
- Sound of Falling (Mascha Schilinsky)
- Invention (Courtney Stephens)
- Nouvelle Vague (Richard Linklater)
Runners-up would be Parthenope (Paolo Sorrentino) and 7 Walks with Mark Brown (Vincent Barré and Pierre Creton). There were a lot of very good theatrical releases that I deemed too old for inclusion.

Hi Dan, I recently rewatched La Collectionneuse and it really had an impact on me this time. It made me want to do a deep dive on Rohmer. Are there any books or writing on him you like? Did you read the biography on him by Antoine de Baecque and Noel Herpe? I know you’re a big fan of his so any recommendations would be appreciated.
